Behaviour - teacher treats my child's behaviour as 'naughty'.

My son is 7 years old and has a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. He attends a mainstream school. His class teacher treats him as a naughty child as he makes a lot of noises and flaps in class which she says distracts the other children. I feel he has no control over these noises but his teacher says this is him being defiant. I do not want to jeopardise my relationship with the school but I need to address this issue. How should I approach this?

Have things improved?

20th Oct 2010.

This question is an old one, and I'm hoping things have improved for your son, however it's such a common one for children with ADHD as well as Autistic behaviours in the classroom. Many teachers do not have specialised training and have little time to spend consistently modifying a child's behaviour, so this is where education of the teacher is important.in Autism so unfortunately it's often up to the parent to become the child's main advocate. You need to keep in close contact with the teacher and school, log your communications, work with the teacher and school and do it in a postive way. If a parent can help the teacher to understand the behaviour, (ie: why they flap and make noise) and also make suggestions, plus give them some information from your local services they should appreciate your input. Realistically your child will need a one to one support learning support worker in the classroom right through school. Learning Support Assistants should be trained in supporting a child with Autism and will work closely with your child to reduce the impact of their behaviour in the classroom and in educating the teacher as to what they are working on with your child. Some Autistic children find life much easier in a school with an Autistic Unit. In a regular school, your child is often seen as the odd one out, but in a more specialised school unit, your child can find others like himself and perhaps be able to enjoy his schooling a little more. Since this is an old post I am hoping you have a lot of support by now!

Give a copy of NAS ASD resource pack for teachers. Get in touch with the Educational Psychologist and hopefully this will lead to a place on Early Bird or Early Bird Plus Course.
