Whether it takes the form of aggression, tantrums, self-injury or property destruction, challenging behaviour can be very distressing for young people with autism and their parents and carers.
For this Q & A we were joined by Dr Emma Douglas, a Senior Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Consultant from TreeHouse School, and Richard Hastings, Professor of Psychology at Bangor University in Wales. The Q & A will took place on 30 January 2013. You can read the transcript below.
Dr Emma Douglas is a Senior ABA Consultant responsible for overseeing the implementation of ABA within the Primary phase of TreeHouse School. She is also part of the school’s Wider Leadership Group.
Emma has worked in the field of autism education (home and school based) and applied behaviour analysis for the past 16 years and has extensive experience in designing, implementing, supervising, monitoring and evaluating ABA provision for children and young adults with autism in addition to training parents and professionals. Emma also has experience in utilising an ABA approach with older adults across a variety of settings (e.g. residential and nursing homes, sheltered accommodation). She has presented her research outcomes both nationally and internationally, published in the field, and conducted related training workshops. Emma has been an ABA Consultant at TreeHouse School since 2004 prior to which she also worked as a researcher within the health service.
Richard Hastings is a Professor of Psychology at Bangor University in Wales. Although he is not a practitioner, Richard has carried out research on questions relating to challenging behaviour for more than 20 years. In particular, he has been interested in the role of other people's responses in understanding why children and adults with disabilities engage in behaviours that challenge, how to design high quality interventions for challenging behaviour, and the impact that child challenging behaviours can have on parents and on siblings in the family. Richard is a Trustee of Mencap and an Expert Adviser to Ambitious about Autism.
