Hi Tom. I'm Nicky and I have a child with high-functioning autism. I'm sure there will be many more people along once we've all found our feet. In fact, I think I might start another thread in this section about people's hobbies and interests - that's usually a good way to break the ice.

Hi Nikki, I think I am reading your messages in the wrong order - which is about normal for me lol, anyway there should be a reply here somewhere!
If your child has high functioning autism then you are very lucky, we are wonderful people and so modest too! lol

Hi Deb, same thing. Like going places, not so good at dealing with people! A lot of people are the same, not all of them are autistic. I think I would like to socialise more, but would hate having to constantly ask people to talk a little slower.
It's good to finally be able to talk with others like me. I thought I was the only survivor from my planet lol.

Hi Tom and everyone else
Im Josie, mother of three children the youngest of whom (also named Tom) has Aspergers Syndrome. He is almost 14 (going on 40 at times). Talks incessantly, expects us to be mindreaders and to know everything he knows (otherwise we are idiots LOL) but we love him dearly. Toms social skills are not great either but he doesnt let it bother him. He talks to anyone and everyone but only on subjects of interest to him. He wants to be a doctor and has his university course planned and if he could he would have his place in Uni booked as well. Hope we can all learn from each other.

Hi Josie, nice to meet you. Yep, Tom sounds like 'one of us' ! I am fortunate that I work with autistic people so I can be myself at work, which helps.
The one thing I do know from personal experience is that the only way for those like us to reach our full potential is to do what we desire the most. In Tom's case, I will not be surprised if he becomes a great doctor - not an 'ordinary' one.
We don't do ordinary, guess you noticed lol.
I'm a musician, and my music plays a major role in my daily life. If you are on facebook then please visit my page Aspergers Network, and please add me as a friend if you want to.
Welcome to Treehouse!

Hi Tom
As you will know by now I have added you on fb and I have also joined your Aspergers Network page. I am just getting to grips with this site. I have spotted that if someone has added a new post there is a blue indication of "new". Pity I didnt spot that yesterday when I was making myself dizzy going in and out of topics LOL Bet you spotted that right away. I have also cottoned on to the yellow envelopes also indicating that I havent been in those messages. So I think I am at last up to date.
Did you get in to the girl with the son with reading difficulties? In the Education topic down near the bottom something to do with "reading" thread. I did message her that you would pop in later and give her your views. I just know that you will be able to help this mum.

Hi Debbie
Welcome to the forum. Hope we can hear more about your son. I have three kids, the youngest is almost 14 and has Aspergers Syndrome. He attends mainstream high school and is doing reasonably well.
Josie

Hi, my name is Tom, I have been chuckling about the fact that the social section is empty so far, that's just like people like us! I think this may become one of the most visited places on the forum before long. If you are like me and don't like crowds or socialising too much then this looks like the place to chill and meet other people in similar situations.
Personally I am interested in meeting other adults with aspergers, and parents of autistic kids.
Please take the time to come and say hello!
Tom
