Hi Damian
Yes, my youngest son who has a diagnosis of Aspergers has always had a large head and quite a high forehead. It's not quite as obvious now that he has stretched somewhat (or maybe I have just got used to it!) .... he is 5' 11" at the moment (14 years old), yet my oldest who I suspect would also fit the Aspergers criteria does not have a noticeably larger head but does have a high forehead (he is also tall being 6ft 3 and 19 years old).

Hi Damian,
Yes, both Josie and Jack's heads are large and always have been. At 6 months old, Josie's head was double the size of Hollie's who was 3! The pictures show just how obvious this was at a very young age....Hollie's head was large at birth, but she quickly grew into it!
We took part in a research project (I think through Oxford) a while ago about head circumferences and autism and we were asked to measure all the children's and our heads for the study....Jack's head aged 2 1/2 was 2 cm smaller than his dads!! I have always struggled to find hats to fit my children, but also to fit me too so I guess my head is bigger than average too....
Now my husband does have an unusually large forhead, but it is definately growing as he gets older! I am pretty sure it is down to him loosing his hair though and not autism!!

It seems to be not universal, yet often appears - that's nature for you though! When I was a teenager, I took up American Football for a while - I had to import a XXL helmet from the states, as the specialist shops in Britain couldn't supply one big enough!

I have 2 with ASD, both have long faces but in particular the more severely affected child has to buy clothes a size up for head room or they get stuck LOL. Our Paed didn't screen for fragile X but I suspect it may have been a good diea.

Hi there,
I am waiting on a diagnosis for my son and he has always had a large head. People used to actually comment on the size of his head. It used to make me feel uneasy.
I have heard of this theory before, wasn't sure how accurate it was, but after talking to a few people whoes kids have autism they have said the same thing.

Hi, my son has an unusualy thick skull and large head, as mentioned by the doctor on one of our many visits to A&E, I had never heard of Fragile X untill i read it here, now I'm wondering if i should ask for a test. He has had his Autistic ADHD diagnosis and is settled into a realy good school, but bless him hes the only one in the family with a big head.

Hello all,
I have often seen ideas relating autism (and also fragile X) to large heads and long faces (both of which I have myself - both me and my son had a head circumference at birth that was off the chart - about the 102 percentile - our poor mothers!). I just saw a random picture of George Orwell on the internet and + thought, mmm...long face, large head circumference, I wonder...typed in 'George Orwell Asperger' in a search engine + up he popped as a possible candidate.
Has anyone else found that they (or their children) have unusually large heads?
