Hi Elena,
Cool idea..
Alistair is easily the most influencial and inspiring person that I have encountered on my path through Autism. He has guided me and shown me his view of the world. I have read lots of books and found information on the internet (Treehouse of course!!!) etc but it is Alistair that leads the way.For me he continually dispels the myths that can be Autism.
At 8 years of age he works harder than anyone I have ever met and he is an absolute joy.
Now for my question :
What would be your top tip to pass on to someone whose child has recently been diagnosed with Autism ???

My perfect Christmas pressie would be a winning lottery ticket.
Question - what would be the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?

I'd build a school for children with Autism first in our area then keep building until all the kids in this country had a safe happy place to learn..... :0)
Question: If there was a magic pill that took Autism away, Would you give it to your child?

Yes I would,
Autism does not define who my children are and yes it has it benefits but I feel the negatives are too much.
I wouldnt give one to my husband though, who we feel is on the spectrum , I wouldnt change him for the world.
How strange is that.
Question - What do you think the cause of Autism is ??

I think it is either genetic.....or I think there are some birth complications (like lack of oxygen) that can cause Autism. Also some head injuries too......Not sure if that actually helps??! I also think that some early infections cause it to 'kick in' hence why some children regress. My son regressed at about 15 months, he lost language, physical skills etc...but he did always have the warning signs that I may have missed had I not already had my daughters diagnosed......
If you had to describe Autism in no more than 3 words what would they be?

Heartbreaking, amazing & challenging.
Question - If a link was proved between the MMR jab & autism, would you let any new children you have get the jab?

Nope.
Even before I became step mum to Johnathon & Alistair I chose not to vaccinate my son with the MMR.
Until they know the reason for Autism how can anyone definitively rule out anything.
I am very wary of all vaccines,
Question - Would having an autistic child make you more cautious about having more children ??

OOOOOO that's really tough because there are so many different levels of Autism and therefore levels of care and time you need to spend with each child is different......I'd have to say no though as I always wanted 3 children.....It didn't stop me, but I can understand that it could be a deciding factor when you want to do the best for the children you have.....
Mainstream schools or specialist schools....which would you choose for your children and why????

EDIT: I've moved this discussion to the "General Autism" area because we're covering mainly autism-related topics, but you can still feel welcome to go off-topic in this particular discussion!
Trying something out here....
This discussion works like so:
1. Answer the question
2. Ask another question
So every post will contain an answer, and a question. Whatever topic you like - news, autism, food, TV, weather, etc. Write however much you like. Just be sure to leave a question for the next person, so that we can keep the "Answer & Ask" theme going.
If a question has already been answered, and you want to answer it too or you think that it's a good jumping off point for another, larger discussion - start a new topic. This one here is just answers and questions.
Ready? I'll go first. :-)
Question: Who has been the most influential/inspiring person you've come across on your path to finding support and help with autism, and why?
