Hi Jen
What a lovely story! My son was diagnosed with Aspergers when he was 7, he is now 14. We have had a dog since he was a baby. Having said that my son is verbal and while he has some difficulties with interpreting the meaning behind other people's use of language and literal interpretation, he manages quite well.
I do remember seeing a film a couple of years ago about a couple with an autistic boy who didnt speak at all and they bought him a puppy with astounding results.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Julia Romp
tried everything to help her autistic son, but it was not until a stray
cat came into their garden that George suddenly came to life - and began
to communicate for the first time. Here, she tells Lucy Ash about the
moment they first met Ben the cat. Hear the whole interview on our
website later today (see "l...atest episode") or read the book: A Friend
Like Ben: The Cat That Came Home for Christmas.

My son has asd an many conditions within that spectrum, one of which is social communication.
We got a dog a few month's ago, and at home, our son is a different child. It's his new best friend, something that he has never had.
He has always had a fear of every animal going and i must admit for the first week, we thought that we might have to give our dog back, due to our son staying in his room, all of the time. But now, he loves his dog so much, he gives him hugs, kisses, talks to him, and it makes our son smile. and he even says to the dog "i love you"
My son still has a fear of every animal going, including other peoples dogs, but that doesn't matter, because my son has a new friend. and what a feeling that is, as a parent.
