Hello, I'm new :)

Hello,

This site was mentioned on a facebook group so I thought I would come and introduce myself and join you all, hopefully I can offer advice and get advice from others.

My name is Elaine and I am mum to Michelle (17), Sam (5) and Erin (3).

Sam was diagnosed with asd (on the more able end of the spectrum) last September.

Looking forward to getting to know some of you, ps I am in the Nottingham area.

Hi Elaine

Welcome to the forum , lovely to meet you :)

I am Mum to 4 , 2 of which are my step sons and are on the spectrum. Alistair is my youngest and is 8, he is autistic with language delay, Johnathon is 14 with Aspergers. I also have a son (10) and daughter (13). I was introduced to the world of autism 4 years ago this August when I became the boys step mum.. since then it has been a very steep learning curve ;)

How are you finding things at the moment ??

Hi Elaine

Welcome to the group.  I have three teenage children, the youngest of whom was diagnosed with Aspergers when he was about 7 (he is now almost 15).  My oldest who is 19 would also probably fit the criteria but does not want to be diagnosed.  I also have a 16 year old daughter.

Look forward to hearing more from you.  Feel free to browse the discussion boards and add to them or ask any questions that come to mind.

Hi Elaine & welcome to the forum

I am mum to 2 boys, 1 who is going to be 5 in June and has ASD and a 1 year old.

Does Sam attend a mainstream school, how does he find it?

Are there any issues troubling you at the moment that you'd like to talk about?

Hi Elaine,

One of my sons was diagnosed at 5 on the higher end of the spectrum. He didnt like his space invaded so would hit out-sometimes in front of the headteacher. They are not subtle about it.He also fidgetted a lot at school and would talk to himself. He didnt seem to be paying attention. He is 11 now and these behaviours have improved.

In other ways he has a very good memory for learning lines for plays and poems and liked science and maths. What does your son enjoy?

Elizabeth (parent of 5 kids.2 diagnosed 1 possibly undiagnosed and 2 NT girls).

Hi Leanne,

Thank you for your warm welcome.

Things are going quite well at the moment, we have good days and bad days with Sam - today has started well!!  As you know things can suddenly change!

Look forward to getting to know you.

Hi Josie,

Thank you for your reply, I am sure there will be plenty of questions I will be asking, there's nothing like talking to others who truly understand.

Look forward to chatting some more!

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for your reply.  Sam is in mainstream school and they are brilliant - he gets 5 mornings one to one, the school added to the funding that they were given so that Sam could get extra help.  He has just started attending a weekly group in school to help develop his social skills.  I think he sometimes things difficult and lets off steam when he comes home!

There's nothing in particular troubling me at the moment but thanks for asking.

Love Elaine
