ASD/ADHD

Hi.. I am a mum of a 4 year old boy who has been diagnosed with an ASD, he also shows strong traits of ADHD but is too young for a diagnosis. I live near Hassocks in West Sussex and am looking to meet/talk with other parents.. Please feel free to contact me as I desperately need to find someone who actually knows how life really is! Dionne x

Hi Dionne

Welcome to the group.   My son is now 14 with a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome and I suspect would also meet the criteria for ADHD, but I will say that this has improved over the years.   I can remember what he was like as a youngster and it was a nightmare.  He still has his moments but I think as they get older and as we work with them, the triggers for certainly the hyperactivity element can be found and eliminated or at least lessened.

My son still gets hyper with certain fizzy drinks which he loves so it's a case of limiting his intake to keep the symptoms down to a manageable level.   Obvious things like parties, large crowds, noise and bright lighting systems also affect him quite badly and probably would today but he now knows that they cause his hyperactivity and anxious behaviour and would rather not be there.

It might be worthwhile keeping a note of extreme displays of  ADHD along with what was going on just before them and therefore being able to pinpoint the things that aggravate his ADHD.

If there is anything specific you want to ask feel free.   I live in Scotland so cant help with "meeting up" but maybe some of the other girls live nearer, but I will happily chat over the web.  If you are on facebook feel free to add me.

Hi Dionne, and welcome! I'm glad you figured out how to join and post your comment. I'm sure others will see this post soon and help out if they can.

We also have the "Where do you live?" discussion which people use to try and find people locally. I forgot to mention this to you before.

But even if you don't find someone near you for a couple weeks, we are always "here" in the online world (which in many ways can often be 'closer' than the person next door!).  :-)

Hi Dionne

I live in Kent so can't help either with meeting up but I too have a 4 year old that was diagnosed with ASD this year & I'd be happy to chat with you on here (or you can look up my details and email me) or on facebook, whichever you'd prefer.  On FB I'm one of Josie's friends 'Tracy Beadle'.

Do you have any particular concerns at the moment, has you son been diagnosed recently, does he attend mainstream school (just a few things you might want to talk about) but feel free to ask anything.

Hopefully we'll talk soon,

Hello Dionne and welcome :)

My son is now nearly 7 and was diagnosed with asd when he was 4. We've been on a steep learning curve both with him and the education system, and things seem to be settling a bit now. If I can help, ask away!!
