Hi there

Hi all.

I'm new to the site. I have a son with high-functioning asd (9yrs), he is currently at mainstream. He has just been excluded for the second time in a year, he has a statement. His main difficulty is handling change and meltdowns. We seem to have got through the escaping from school section, but now he just lashes out at teachers and destroys the classroom. The anger management was in his statement but still hasn't happened. We have a meeting with the govenors - but I don't know! I'm tired of continually explaining his condition to people and that its not 'cold calulated bad behaviour' - the headteachers words! We think my dad is asd also - although he would never agree - he ended up having home tutoring as a child and then dropped out of education altogether.

Hi Saffron

Welcome to the group.   It seems to be a common problem with our children that their education is blighted by the inability of the eduction department to provide the correct supports for our kids.

You say your son is high functioning;  my son has Aspergers Syndrome and attends mainstream school (he is now 14 and in High School) and has had some difficulties but mostly with the High School.

Do his teacher's realise that he needs to be informed of the schedule of activities each day?   I know that the teacher's in my son's primary school were really good at telling him first thing exactly what was going to happen each day.  They also gave him advance warning of changes to the routine or the teacher.

Does your son have an SEN?

I personally find that kids who are high functioning dont get the support they need, probably because they look and act like they should be able to manage without support.  Of course, we know this is not so, but financial constraints play their part in the lack of facilities, specialist staff, etc.

There is a thread titled "Education" where you will find a lot of other good advice if you want to have a look through them.

Feel free to ask any specific questions and we will do what we can to help you.

Hi Saffron

Welcome to the forum.  I have a 4 year old with ASD who started mainstream school in September but the school & I have already agreed that he would be better educated in a specialist provision.  From looking at a few schools I think there is a big gap that needs filling in places to educate children with high functioning ASD.

I think Josie's advice above to look through the education forum is a very good one as there are lots of people who have been or who are in a similar position to you.  I would definately request a meeting with your sons head & the SEN & keep phoning & requesting meetings until they listen to you & put the appropriate strategies in place for your son.

As Josie said, feel free to ask any specific questions you may have.

Hi all,

Thanks for the support. Christmas has been lovely with no school! We now finally have anger management scheduled, but only because we have asked to have a meeting with the govenors and an early emergency meeting of his statement review. Not sure how far we'll progress with it all but we have to keep trying. We are going to visit a school called Springhallow, a specialist school in Ealing. We have have mixed views from others at this possible course of action. Some within the family think it would be his downfall, others think we have no real choice. Even if we like it though there are only 8 spaces in each class and so we may have a long wait for a placement. Ho-hum!

If anyone has any views on Springhallow - Ealing, or knows of any other good schools for High functioning ASD in the surrounding area, please do tell.

Hi Saffron,

Welcome to the gang!! I read through your post and I haven't heard of the school you mentioned...although one bit of advice, rather than focus on getting your son on a waiting list if you like the school....focus on getting the school named on his statement that way the LA have to put him in there now! THere is lots of advice about appeals and statements etc in the education section, but if you have any particular questions, I'd be happy to help :0)

Hi Saffron

I haven't heard of the school either but I think you'll definately get a gut feeling as to whether its the school you want for your son or not.  I recenty visited 3 & it wasn't until I saw the 3rd that it all made sense & I decided which school I wanted him to attend.  I just wanted to pick up on your comments about your family's views on sending your son to a specialist school, most of my family really want my son to go to a special school as they worry about him in mainstream but my Dad who absolutely idolises Dylan isn't in agreement at all.  He feels that by us taking him out of mainstream school we are taking him out of mainstream life, I disagree, I feel that I would rather he attends & flourishes in a specialist placement rather than just struggles along in mainstream just for the sake of it, I think it will be so much better for his self esteem aswell.

I just wanted to say that don't let others sway your decision as you know your son best & you know whats best for him.

Do keep us updated with how you get on.
