I haven't seen the advert (through choice because I know it will make me very angry). The extract above is enough to upset me. How are we supposed to encourage greater awareness and inclusion if this is what people believe?

I'm considering asking my group members to email the fan clubs of some of the celebs that fundraise for Autism Speaks and ask them to rethink what they are doing. Someone sent me a message last night to say that Autism Speaks recently sued a 14 year old girl for posting videos under the heading NT speaks. It was a parody of Autism Speaks, but they successfully argued that they had lost income due to this. I can't verify this story - but I am trying.
I don't want to use up too much time on this lot, but hopefully stuff like this will just make us stronger and more determined to spread the truth about autism.
Rant over - phew!

Hi Tom
Yes, I agree with you about the video "I am Autism". I also found it very negative. Yes, most of the points are true for some but not all the points for everyone. I think it would be a very scary thing for someone with either a new diagnosis or the parent of a child newly diagnosed.
I know that when it first came out there was a lot of outrage about it and as far as I am aware the sponsors have already been petitioned re withdrawing from sponsorship of Autism Speaks. I dont think the video has had much airtime; certainly not on facebooks that I can see. Apart from the one post from one of my fb friends when it first came out I have not had it posted again and I have a fair few fb autie friends.
Hope you are all well in the Valleys!

Claire.
Keep going and don't give up, it took us best part of 18 months to get adequate schooling for our son, and my wife is a hoarder of information on all of our kids, so I had plenty of ammo to use, I threatened with the tribunal, but sat in a meeting with the teachers and explained to them on numerous occassions where the failings were and the dates are being logged, funny enough I was told no need for tribunal and we got what we wanted.
Its just a shame everything is such an uphill struggle to get what every child is alledgedly guaranteed which is a decent education for everyone, it doesn't say anywhere that there is only way of educating a child

Ah yes the Autism speaks video apprently directed by the same bloke who directed Harry Potter, yes it is offensive, yes it does paint a grim picture, I would not be how I would have described Autism, but this person has not had his life touched by Autism, and has little understanding of it, its the same as when you tell someone who doesn't know anything about Autism the first thing they mention is Rain Man, not anything about how it affects the lives of the individual or the families around them. I find it hard to find any positives on Autism, if there are any, but the Autism speaks advert certainly over-egged the cake, if this is the advert imagine how the money is being spent?
Ill researched and ill advised, it should have been presented totally differently, the way it was prevented has pretty much put people with Autism at a disadvantage and described them like lepers,
