Where can I find a list of suitable schools?

Hi

I am now starting the process of transition  from Junior to Senior.Son has been at a special school since 5 years old.It has been a lovely school, he has progressed very well and I have been lured into a false sense of security.Transition is looming for September 2012 and I had intended to start looking around but have been told his next school will be decided at his annual review in April! He will definately be put forward to the local Senior special needs school(most of the children from his current school go there and its costs arent prohibitive to the LEA).However a lot of childrens parents dont seem very happy with the school and there are some major building works due in the next few years which will concern my autistic son.

So how do I find a list of schools in the South East/West London which might be suitable?I cannot find a list anywhere just a few bits of info here and there on the internet. Anyone know of a good website to start?

Best wishes

Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth! I'll see what I can turn up and get back to you (unless someone else does first!)

Hi Elizabeth

The National Autistic Society have a really good service called Signpost.  You type in a few (anonymous) details about yourself - who you are, the age of your child, your postcode etc - and it brings back a list of all the autism services in your local area.  I think you can specify that you want to know about schools, and the radius around your address as well.  I think the list is pretty comprehensive and would certainly be a good starting point.

The address for Signpost is: http://signpost.autism.org.uk/

I hope this helps!

Hi Elizabeth

I'd also recommend this search engine, where you can do a search by post code:

http://schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk/

Good luck with it all,

Hi

This is the website I use it is the autism services directory.  Have attached a link below but it can be found through the NAS website

http://www.autismdirectory.org.uk/Pages/Index.aspx?cg_type_id=1&cg_id=292&ca_type_id=2&ca_id=1&status=1

It lists all schools that take ASD children around the country.

Very helpful, thank you Jane!

Thankyou everybody. Sorry i did not reply earlier. My arthritis has been a problem and I have had to struggle with everyday things. Anyway managed to traipse round the LEA preferred school and must say I was reasonably impressed with it and could seee my son settling there. As my son is a more able child on the spectrum I doubt I wou;ld get any funding for anywhere else anyway. So as it stands i am going to apply to that school.

However I do hope other parents will find these posts very interesting and informative and thank you all for your help and advice.
