Hi Leanne

Yes, the advertised this right after the Autistic Me last night.  I think this will be another good "watch".

Looks good! I'll share this on FB & Twitter too

Here's the website for it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/comingup/the-autistic-driving-school/

Hi All

What a fab programme.  I found it very informative.  I did say to my DH that we would have to start reading the highway code with Rob now (he's only 11).  Our DD is learning to drive at the moment and Rob is fascinated and a little bit jealous I think too.  Did anybody else watch?

I am a driving instructor and I have a brother who is severely autistic and also has downs he cannot communicate verbally but we understands his needs and love him dearly.  I am only 15 months older than him and have always been very close to him.  I've just watched BB3's The Autistic Driving School and was so impressed with the people passing their driving tests especially with so few minor faults there's not many people passing their driving tests with so few minor faults.  I was so interested in this programme that it has made me think about specializing my teaching to people with Autism. I think my job is so rewarding when people pass their test but i think it would be even more rewarding.  What an inspiration the Driving Instructor on the film is.

I watched it and it certainly was a great programme.  There's not many programmes that make think about changing my life but I am seriously looking into specializing in teaching people with autism how to drive. I love my job but I think i would love it even more as ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to help people with special needs, I have done various voluntary work but what a way to combine the 2 things.

Hi Julie

I haven't managed to watch the show yet but I think your idea sounds wonderful.. you would have such a brilliant insight into the condition  and would no doubt make such a huge difference to peoples lives. Go for it !!!

Hi Julie

Welcome to the forum :)

I havent see the programme yet either, but I agree with Leanne that it would be a great idea for you to offer your services to the autism community.   Your knowledge and understanding of autism would be so beneficial to those on the spectrum who want to learn to drive.

It was a fantastic programme.  I loved the driving instructor on it - she was so cheerful and so skilled and I thought how great it was that she had done that after experiencing all those years of bullying and violence.

It would have helped me hugely to have a driving instructor who understood the autism spectrum.  I laughed when I heard the driving instructor on this one say that you mustn't be too literal with us and tell us "turn left", because we literally do.  Yup, guilty as charged! :-)  It's how I failed my first driving test (after a five year struggle to learn) - by turning left the instant he said it!

I find it hugely easier to drive an automatic car, too.  I would panic endlessly about clutch control and hill starts, and now I don't need to worry.

Hi all -

I was the driving instructor on 'Autistic Driving School.'

Thanks for watching the show!!

Being autistic myself, I did the documentary just to prove to the world out there that people with autism can achieve, we can contribute to society and we can succeed!
