Find a mentor

Would you like to partner with a Community Mentor?

Joining an online community is a wonderful and rewarding activity, especially for those of us involved with autism and looking to find information and connect with others like ourselves. The Talk about Autism community is a very friendly and welcoming place – it would be an ideal community for you to join and gain some confidence in communicating online with those affected by autism.

For some people, joining an online community is very simple and they are able to register and start discussions straight away, with no hesitation. It almost seems second nature for these people to communicate online!

It’s not so straightforward for all of us though… In fact, most of us spend quite a lot of time thinking of precisely what we’d like to say and how we’d like to say it. I personally have felt very shy introducing myself to a new group of friends who I’ve never seen or spoken to before! I also worry a lot about how something I say will come across to everyone else, and I spend a lot of time revising my comments and replies before I actually post them for everyone to view. You may think you’re the only one who feels like this, but trust me - even those of us who have been around a while still get anxious from time to time!

How to
find a helping hand in the community

It’s always nice to have a friend to start off with. And we have some new friends waiting for you!

If you’d like to have a helping hand to get you through those first steps of joining the Talk about Autism community, we would like to connect you with one of our Community Mentors.

There are two ways to be connected with someone who can help you. You can either send me a private email at elena@talkaboutautism.org.uk or if you're already a member, you can visit the Community Mentor - Find a helping hand discussion and leave a comment to express your interest.

Once we hear from you, you will be partnered with one of our members who has been around a while. Together you chat about any aspects of the community which may be confusing to you. For example, they can explain how the discussion forum works and how you can post a question, they can look over your first post and help you with the wording, or give you advice on the best ways of asking for information – and anything else which you may need a hand with.

We look forward to hearing from you!
