Hi i'm new to this site

Hi everyone i'm new to this site, i found the web address in the daily mirror. I am a single mother of two young boys aged 7 and 5. My oldest son has Autism and mild ADHD. Pleased to meet you all :)

Hello Zoe,

Welcome to our community, so pleased you have found us :)
Hooray for the Daily Mail !!!

Can I ask which part of the UK you are from ...assuming of course that you are :)

How is your son doing at school ?? I have just answered another of your posts and wondered if the lack of sleep affects him at school. Does he attend a mainstream and does he have a statement ??

How long has he had his diagnosis for ?? So many questions .. sorry :)

Hello,

Leanne - Zoe said the Mirror and not the Mail (dunno - just thought I'd point that out as a non-Mail reader) - it is good that the site is advertised and that this is encouraging people to have a look.

Hello Zoe! I'm sure you will find the site useful.

Hi there
I just wanted to wish you a warm welcome. I am mum to 3 children, the youngest of which is showing signs of autism but at nearly 2, I have been told he is too young to diagnose. I am very new to this site and to autism but the people here are helping me so much.
I hope you find the site as useful as I am, it is great for advice and ideas. Looking forward to learning more about you and your boys.

Thank you everyone for such a warm welcoming :)

I'm from sheffield, i would say sunny sheffield but its looking a little dull outside.

My my son tyler is very behind at school, which worrys me greatly, he is in a mainstream school as i've heard it would be extremly difficult to place him in a school where i feel he'd get more help. I've heard the other schools are brilliant and even offer help during holidays which i would appreciate living on my own. Tyler looks tired but i don't think thats why his school work suffers. The school where concerned about Tyler in class last year and they referred him to rygate where he was diagnosed, so he's been diagnosed for just under a year. Tyler isn't naughty (he can be) but at school he has a very short attention span and sometimes seems to be in his own world i get very worried as the only work he doe's in class is draw pictures. His teacher says she suspects he's really good with numbers but he still has a low grade as it is imposible to record his level as he doesn't do the work.

I can't explain how i often feel about Tyler having Autism and Mild ADHD, at times i'm frustrated not with Tyler, but with others at school and out in public etc, a few months ago, he wanted a chicken sandwhich for his dinner and the dinner lady explained there was only turkey and ham, but because of his lack of comuncation skills, she just gave him chicken curry. A friends child told me after school, that tyler was crying in the dinner hall and five dinner ladys and the head teacher would not let him eat desert till he'd eaten his dinner! I was so angry after spending months trying to get the school to be aware of tyler and then he had to endure that. He now has someone to sit with at dinner who orders his food.

Sorry Leanne but whats a statement? As tyler is my first and i don't know any other moms with children with autism, i just assume tyler was like every other child his age, everythings still very new to me. Tyler had a tick (fit) at school a month ago and i didn't know till a member of staff told me children with autism can be affected fits. Please excuse my spellings :)

Hi Zoe,

Here are a few links to groups in Sheffield which might be able to help you.

The Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University has a very good reputation. They offer free holiday events for children and may be able to give you some advice and support too.

The Local Authority Autism Team should be able to offer some support for Tyler and his teachers at school. They're based at Ryegate so will have some information about Tyler already.

There's also the Sheffield Autistic Society which is a support group run by parents. They should be able to offer you some support and help with Tyler's education. They will help with the statementing process which would ensure that Tyler's needs were being met by his school.

Hi Zoe,
Very briefly a statement is slang for a 'statement of special educational needs' .. it is a legal document which details what your childs specific educational requirements are and ensures that they are fully met.

There is a section on here which explains it and once I can find it I will highlight it :)

Because the statement is a legally binding document the LEAs are reluctant to issue them and in my experience it is not something that is actively promoted by them however it is something which is vital to ensure that your childs rights are protected and that you are not fobbed off.

Does Tyler have any speech therapy input ?? Does he have an IEP (individual educational plan)at school ?? When he was diagnosed did you get feedback from the educational psy ??

My youngest attended a mainstream school for 3 years but last September transferred to a mainstream with attached autism unit.

So pleased you are here.. it is such a cool site and has helped me out hugely over the last year.. hopefully you will find it useful too :)
Until I joined this forum I didn't know anyone else who had autistic children and felt very isolated.

There's some information here about special needs and statements, Please ask if you want any more information. It's quite a complex system.
