Hi Charlotte,
Welcome to the forum. Great to hear that you want a career in this field. Do you have a link with autism?
Sadly, it is very difficult to get appropriate support for many children and adults. This forum will give you a good insight into the effect of autism on families and individuals. It's not all bad news though and I hope the positive aspects come through too.

Hi Charlotte
Welcome to the forum :)
It's really encouraging to hear from all you young folk who are interested in a career in the field of autism and the related therapies.
Hopefully it will make life easier for the upcoming generations, certainly easier than we have found it.
If you need to ask questions or need directions to any particular subject, just ask.

Hi Charlotte, and welcome!
I would love to know what has inspired you to think of a career in this field. This is definitely a good place to get insight into the struggles people experience, and will no doubt inform your own work!
See you around!

Hi Charlotte,
Welcome to the gang!! I am mum to 3 children with Aspergers/ASD aged 4, 12 and 14...I am so glad to hear you are interested in working with children with autism and that you are actively out there looking for ideas and real life info to help your understanding...there is loads in the news at the moment about the NAS campaign to get CAMHS services sorted out for kids with autism...my 14 yr old is one of the young campaigners for this and its something that means a lot to us as it does many other families too...are you wanting to work in CAMHS?
Its something that has crossed my mind recently...I have been thinking of a career change and going into councelling or therapies for children with autism...

Thanks for the warm welcome :)
Well, whilst doing my a-levels, Psychology quickly became my favourite subject...which led me to become interested in child development and become aware of autism.
in 6th form, we had to carry out a weeks work experience and I chose to do mine at a school for children with learning disabilities, communication disorders and autism. really really enjoyed this and it was my first experience on a personal level with autistic children. was amazing the relationships you can build up with children in just a week and it deff confirmed to me that I wanted to work with children in this setting in the future. was actually quite sad it was just for a week!
my psychology degree covered issues around autism, and my uni had a volunteer scheme where you could sign up to various different organisations. I volunteered one day a week at a play centre for children (and their families) with special needs or terminal illness' and came across autistic children here too.
Since graduating I have worked as a nanny to 3 children (no special needs) and worked as a teaching assistant in a mainstream school. Really enjoy being around children and can't imagine having a job that doesn't involve working with them.
I can't really explain what interests me about wanting to work with children with autism...I just know I do!
I just find it very fascinating and think it would be a very worthwhile and fulfilling careerer.
(plus I am addicted to all those t.v documentary's like 'autistic me' and the autistic disco one!)
I have an important job interview coming up this week, so I'm spending my time preparing for that at the moment.
bumbleebee- I am just googling CAMHS now!

Hi Charlotte
Good luck with the interview and its great to hear how enthusiastic you are about working with children with ASD.
My son was recently diagnosed in March 2010 with Autism and this site has given me real hope and great advice, so you are in good hands here.
I will just echo what claire has said please look up the "you need to know NAS" campaign and please show your support.
Once again welcome and good luck for the interview.
