I'd like to help!

Hi, my name is Sam and I live in Old Trafford, Manchester. I would love to help any local families dealing with autism at weekends, holidays etc. I am a 41 year old teaching assistant, work with kids with autism/global delay/learning difficulties and live on my own with my gorgeous coeliac disease suffering daughter! We would both love to volunteer sometime at the weekends to helping local families by providing a bit of respite care....maybe even just a couple of hours. I obviously hold an enhanced CRB and can provide references from my employer but am at a loss as how to contact local families to provide a bit of support. Any suggestions are very welcome, thanks :-D

Hi Sam, so glad you decided to come post your information here. Welcome to the community! We'll keep an ear out for people in Manchester who might like to chat with you.

Hi Sam,

Welcome to our community :)

Have you tried contacting your local Barnardos.. they offer all sorts of respite care and are always after volunteers.

Hi Leanne

Will do that this afternoon! Many thanks!

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the forum. Great to hear from you.

There's also the befriending services through the NAS.
Let us know how you get on, won't you.

Hi everyone....thanks for the speedy replies. I have contacted Barnados who promised to call back immediatley, nothing yet and I have also applied for the befriending scheme with the NAS...nothing back from that either. I even rang manchester City Council and offered my services, they seemed perplexed as to why I would do this if I didnt want to make money as a full time foster carer! I explained I'm just a busy single mum who works but would just simply like to help maybe another struggling Mum in the area. They also said they would get back to me, we shall see........ I shall keep going as Im sure someone must need a helping hand somewhere. Thanks again everyone for all suggestions :D

Hi Sam

Welcome to the forum  :)

Just found your post and as my son and I receive respite which is very welcome as I too am a single parent with three kids, one on the spectrum, I had a little "google" and found this website for the Manchester Autism Resource Centre who, it would appear, are looking for volunteers.

http://www.autism.org.uk/our-services/adult-and-community-services/adult-and-community-services-by-area/manchester-service/manchester-autism-resource-centre/volunteer-at-the-manchester-autism-resource-centre.aspx

It's a mother and daughter team that picks my son up every Thursday evening and take him for four hours and the break is much appreciated by both myself and my other two children.

I think it's really wonderful that you want to do this for a family in need and it would be great if you kept in touch and let us know how you get on.
