Peter

My name is Karen and i have been married to Gary for 25 years. We adopted Peter in 2005 when he was 4 years old, he settled in really quickly and we became a 'family'. A couple of years ago I noticed that maybe there was something a little different about Peter alongside other children of his age, nut the paediatrician, social workers and teachers just kep ttelling me that due to his early child experiences he is a little behind but would soon catch up.... However as time went by he wasn't catching up and I saw a programme about Asperger Syndrome and I recognised some of the traits that Peter was displaying. Again I spoke to the appropriate people about my fears but nobody was listening.........Finally in the last few weeks (after at least 18 months of appointments, visits etc etc) Peter has finally been diagnosed with Aspergers. I am so relieved to finally hear this but at the same time the diagnosis could have been made earlier as Peter will be 9 in September but displays the characteristics of a 6 year old and he has an awful lot of catching up to do at school. I am not sure what is going to happen with his educational needs yet as its still early days, but it just proves that early diagnosis can make a huge difference to all concerned.
